Do you feel tired of spending hours trying to find your clothes, shoes or other daily essentials in your home? Sometimes you may feel as though you are drowning in material possessions yet cannot bring yourself to throw any of them away. Get inspired, with these creative and practical ways to simplify your life and give your home the essence of more space.

In your entryway

A neat and tidy entranceway is beneficial, as it is the first thing that visitors will see when they enter your home. Also, it is where you scramble to grab your shoes, hats and any other accessories as you rush out the door.

If there are multiple people living in your home, one great way to organise all of your belongings at the front door is to convert an old bookshelf/storage unit into DIY lockers featuring hooks for hats and coats and shelves at the bottom for shoes and sports gear. You can even label these ‘lockers’ with each person’s name. If you want to create clean lines and eliminate possible odours in your entryway, you could consider putting doors on your lockers to hide untidy clothes and shoes from guests.

To store your keys and other smaller items that you require on a daily basis in your entryway without having to have a side table, use key hooks as well as hanging storage boxes to avoid taking up floor space.

In your bedroom

To save space in your bedroom consider investing in a bed with built-in storage units both underneath the bed and in the bedhead. This helps to store clothes, books, shoes, spare linen and accessories in your bed eliminating the need for shelving or a dresser.

If you are particularly short on space and wish to use your bedroom for other purposes during the day, such as a space to do yoga or study, you could choose a bed which folds away neatly into a cupboard situated in the wall. Alternatively, if you already have a bed that stands on four legs you could raise your bed to create more storage space underneath.

To store shoes in your bedroom, place hooks on either the back of your door or cupboard door and hang shoes in pairs for easy access. To prevent the build-up of dirty clothes on your bedroom floor, try hanging your clothing basket from the inside of your cupboard door or build it into your cupboard so that it can be tucked away neatly.

The most important rule to make the most of the space in your bedroom is to maximise your use of wall space. Place hooks all around your bedroom to hang hats and jewellery and consider mounting invisible bookshelves, as well as pegboards to pin up any loose paper, small jewellery or photographs. Hanging keys or other important items behind photo frames is another great way to save space in your bedroom as well as create clean lines.
